ESA Ecodesign Policy: what it means for industry and the European space sector

Webinar
Description

An online information session for the European Space industry about the ESA Ecodesign Policy. Join this online webinar to learn about the policy, why it has been introduced, and what it means in practice for different space actors across the space sector.

During this session, the ESA Clean Space Office and Strategic Sustainability Team will walk companies, national space agencies, academia and consulting organisations through how ESA is moving from measuring environmental impacts to reducing them through a systematic ecodesign approach in space projects.

The webinar will explain the policy background, its practical implications for current and future contracts, and the opportunities it creates for innovation, capability building and new activities linked to more sustainable technologies, materials and processes.

Participants will also gain an overview of the technical framework developed by ESA to support implementation, including guidance materials and supporting resources.

You will find the link to the webinar available under the resources tab once you sign into the Learning Hub.

Objectives
  • inform ESA external stakeholders about ESA’s Ecodesign Policy context and the next steps for its applicability from the space industry
  • help participants to understand why ecodesign is becoming increasingly important for the space sector
  • show what will become compulsory in future contracts and what this may mean for ongoing activities
  • present practical’s requirements examples
  • present supporting Ecodesign framework and support to industry

Participants will discover the technical framework and support resources developed by ESA, including guidance materials.

Background

Sustainability is a major priority for ESA, reflected in ESA Strategy 2040 and the ESA Green Agenda, with the objective to meet ESA’s environmental goals, focusing on systematically incorporating ecodesign and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tasks into future space activities. Building on more than a decade of experience applying LCA to space systems, ESA is now taking the next step: moving from understanding environmental hotspots to acting on them through ecodesign.

The ESA Ecodesign Policy applies life-cycle thinking to the procurement of ESA space projects within its scope. Its objective is to support the systematic reduction of environmental impacts while strengthening innovation, efficiency and the competitiveness of the European space sector.

This webinar is aimed at space-related companies, including existing or prospective ESA suppliers, large system integrators, SMEs and midcaps, as well as national space agencies, academia working on space and space sustainability, and consulting companies supporting space actors. The session recognises that levels of familiarity with ecodesign vary across the ecosystem and is designed to provide both strategic context and practical clarity for all the stakeholders involved.
