IP and patent lecture series: Trade secrets - the concept and how to manage them (November 2022)
This is the fifth lecture in a series of nine online sessions about Intellectual Property (IP) and patents, strategic tools to be taken into consideration in a company's business decisions and strategy. The sessions will run in the November + December 2022 time frame.
In this session, participants will learn what trade secrets are and what role they play in today's economy. Companies will also learn what they should do to take advantage of this intellectual property form and to avoid common pitfalls in trade secret management.
This session aims at:
- raising awareness among attendants about the basic aspects of trade secrets
- understanding which are the risks and pros and cons of using this form of protection
- knowing the basic principles of a sound trade secret management system
The session aims at providing a general overview about the topic of trade secrets and covers the following sections:
- What is a trade secret: economic significance and role in enterprises
- Legal concept: legal requirements of information for qualifying as trade secrets; examples of trade secrets; legal rights and remedies offered in general in case of misappropriation/unlawful acquisition; assignment and licensing of trade secrets
- Management of trade secrets: goals of a trade secret management system; elements of a trade secret management system; protective measures to implement
