This is the first lecture in a series of nine online sessions about Intellectual Property (IP) and patents, strategic tools to be taken into consideration in a company's business decisions and strategy. The sessions will run in the November + December 2022 time frame.

In this session, instructors will explain the make-up of a patent and how to interpret the background, invention summary and patent claims. The lecture will provide the skills needed to make an assessment of the relevance of a patent to your business.

Target Group

Companies wishing to build a basic understanding of how to read and interpret a patent. This will include start-ups, SMEs and companies/organisations who need to be able to interpret patents and understand how they might be relevant to their own commercial interests.

 

Objectives

To provide attendees with the knowledge needed to understand how to read and interpret a patent. Attendees will learn what each section is for and how each part can be important to both R&D and commercial activities of companies.

 

Outline
  • Introduction to the purpose of a patent
  • Outline of how a patent is written and constructed
  • Explanations of each section (Background, Invention Summary, Detailed description and figures, the Abstract and the Patent Claims) including explanations of the significance to R&D, commercial activities and legal scope of protection
